Part of my joy in reading Horseman comes from the nostalgia of revisiting Sleepy Hollow and its characters. Until he happens upon a child’s headless body while out exploring, and he and the villagers are forced to wonder whether the fabled Horseman has returned. Ben spends his days helping Brom on the farm and playing games in the woods, living quietly in the Hollow. Henry picks the story up 30 years after the Headless Horseman chased Ichabod Crane from town and introduces us to 14-year-old Ben Van Brunt, grandson of Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel. But the novel ends with the hope for progress. Stockett focuses on one particular low point in the civil rights movement: the violent murder of the black activist Medgar Evers by a pro-segregation white man. In the early sixties, if a black man used a white bathroom, he could expect white men to burn down his house, beat him, or even lynch him. However, the majority of white Southerners opposed these changes, with some people even resorting to violence to maintain segregation. Civil rights protestors sought to dissolve “the color line,” a metaphor for segregation, by integrating the facilities and institutions that were kept separate. White and black people had separate hospitals, bathrooms, schools, and even graveyards. 6/10/2023 0 Comments Peter and wendy 1911![]() It’s true that we live in an era that’s particularly prone to giving dark-and-gritty reboots to beloved children’s properties (see Anne of Green Gables but with PTSD and sex-and-murder-filled Archie Comics), but Peter Pan seems to lend itself particularly well to this kind of transformation. And most of those reimaginings, Lost Boy included, have tended to transform the eternally innocent Peter into a villain. Since Peter Pan’s EU copyright expired in 2008, reimaginings and remixes of the story have flourished, including most recently Christina Henry’s Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook.
